RICHMOND HILL – Our September 12 auction FINE CHINESE CERAMICS & ASIAN WORK OF ART will feature a Guangxu Period Dayazhai Grisaiile Decorated Bottle at lot 423 – The body of globular form below a columnar neck and straight rim. Decorated on the body with grisaille painted peonies on an Imperial Yellow ground and marked DAYAZHAI with the studio seal – TIANDI YIJIACHUN. The neck with bats, jeweled hangings and scrolling lotus vine in grisaille on a yellow ground, the base with a turquoise band of lotus. Base marked CHANGCHUN YONGQING – Eternal prosperity and enduring Spring.
Dayazhai style porcelains were a particular favourite of the Empress Dowager Cixi (1835 – 1908) who may have been personally involved in selecting subjects and colour combinations for important works. Only one other example of this design style appears to have been published and sold at auction – Christie’s Melbourne, 9 March 2006, Lot 119. H: 39.5 cm, Diameter of Neck: 9 cm, Diameter of body: 27 cm. Estimated at $30000 – $60000
Also highlighting the afternoon auction will be lot 170 an Important Chinese Emerald Green Jadeite Bangle $4000-$8000. Our August 12 sale had a similar bangle that had a floor bidder win the lot at a hammer price of $55000. The demand for quality Jadeite continues to surpass all estimates.
