A SPARKLING TIME…AT RICHARD WINTERTON AUCTIONEERS

A vast diamond brooch along with a haul of other fine jewellery, silver and gold contributed to a record auction in Lichfield this week, (20th November).

diamond broochBidders packed into the room and were poised to bid live on the internet as far afield as the USA, China, New Zealand, Singapore and Australia. Over £40,000 of stock sold to online internet bidders.

The old cut diamond floral brooch dating from the 1950’s contained two large diamonds of approximately 2.5ct each along with numerous smaller diamonds totalling over 14ct in all. The property of a Sutton Coldfield lady, it along with other diamond and precious metal jewels had been stored in a bank vault for many years gathering dust. The floral brooch totalled £9,500, a £1.4ct diamond ring brought £3,000 and an Art Deco diamond bracelet realised £2,200.

Another sparkly luxury – hallmarked silver in the sale had been sourced privately and from a number of local estates totalling £15,500. Highlights included a full size silver Mexican sombrero at £800.

Elsewhere in the same sale held at Richard Winterton’s City Centre Salerooms, a nineteenth century Black Forest carved wooden Oxon group was bid up to £2,500 from a USA collector and a collection of rare and fine whiskies including a 1960 bottle of Macallan totalled £1,800.

Perhaps one of the most unusual items in the sale was Lot 361, an Edwardian ‘Norfolk Liar’, (a small device for logging the number of rabbits, hares, pheasants and partridges one would bag in a shoot). It shot to £280.

The next Jewellery, Silver and Antiques Sale is 18th/19th December. Please phone 01543 251081 for further details.
