Francois Linke Bibliotheque Highlights Bonhams Auction

Bonhams will offer a recently rediscovered Francois Linke Louis XV/XVI style gilt bronze and marquetry bibliotheque (est. $400,000-600,000) in its Fine European Furniture and Decorative Arts auction, March 17 in San Francisco.

Francois Linke is the most sought after French ebenistesof the second half of the 19th century. This unique cabinet, never offered before, is one of Linke’s masterpieces illustrated in Christopher Payne’s “Nineteenth Century European Furniture.” The 11 marquetry trophy panels, impressive scale and jewel-like ormolu mounts combine to make the bibliotheque one of the finest examples of 19th century cabinetmaking.

The bibliotheque is from the collection of Jack and Helen Tramiel of Monte Sereno, Calif. The Tramiels were avid collectors and connoisseurs of 19th century French and Continental furniture and decorative arts for more than 40 years. With a discerning eye, they furnished the family residence with masterpieces including the piece de resistance, the important Louis XV style Francois Linke bibliotheque.

The sale’s illustrated catalog will be available online in the weeks preceding the sale, for review and purchase at www.bonhams.com/auctions/21618/.
