A Palatable Day For The Wine Market

The innovative joint venture between online wine specialists, Bid for Wine, and traditional auction house, Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions’ saw fine red wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux achieve stellar prices at their inaugural London sale of Fine Wine, Champagne, Port and Select Fine Spirits on Thursday 3rd April 2014.

Three bottles of Richebourg Grand Cru 1996 Domaine de la Romanee Counti, (DRC), from the cellar of a Kentish Doctor, led the red Burgundy section selling for £3,068, [Lot 46] and two three litre bottles of Clos de Tart Grand Cru, 2008, doubled its pre-sale estimate of £600-800, selling to a telephone bidder in Hong Kong for £1,416. [Lot 55]

Topping the red Bordeaux was 12 bottles of Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, Pessac Leognan, 2005, which sold for £3,540. The Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion is classed among the Grand Crus in the Graves classification of 1953, with this 2005 vintage deriving from a particularly strong harvest. [Lot 112]

Five bottles of the 1982 vintage Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, sold for £2,832 [Lot 75] and from the same exceptional year, three bottles of Chateau Haut Brion Graves sold for £1,298. [Lot 74] Classed as a Premier Cru Classé (First-growth) the renowned Chateau Haut Brion also saw 12 bottles of its 2006 vintage achieve £2,478. [Lot 116]

Other excellent Bordeaux in the sale included 12 bottles of Chateau Latour, 1976 which sold for £2,242 [Lot 68] and two bottles of Chateau Petrus, 1988 Pomerol, which sold for £2,124. [Lot 84]
