Chiswick Auctions is pleased to announce their upcoming 300 lot Asian Art auction on 5 May 2015.
The sale will offer a range of works of pieces from China, Japan, India and South East Asia and continues Chiswick Auction’s reputation for important new discoveries. Our present offering is particularly strong in the fields of cloisonné enamel, later bronzes, paintings and jewellery.
Cloisonné: Following the exceptional result we achieved with a Ming cloisonné enamel tripod incense burner in our specialist sale of 10 February 2015 (£36,000 including premium), we are pleased to offer two important pieces of Ming cloisonné.
The first is formed as a begging bowl decorated to the body with two facing long-tailed Makara, the base with a ribboned double vajra (lot 70, estimate: £10,000 – 15,000).
The second, a duck-form cloisonné enamel and gilt bronze censer, formed in two sections with a trapezoid base (lot 71, estimate: £20,000 – 30,000).
Later Bronzes: Later bronzes, long neglected as a category in favour of their archaic ancestors, are currently experiencing a well-deserved ground swell of interest.
We are pleased to present a loop-handled gold splashed tripod censer (lot 105, estimate: £6,000 – 8,000) as well as a parcel-gilt bronze gui-form censor by Hu Wenming (lot 106, estimate: £12,000 – 18,000).
Painting: Painting forms a strong section in the forthcoming sale following successes in this category in previous auctions. Of particular interest is the painting “Welcoming Spring”, depicting a goat herd surrounded by 81 goats (lot 115, estimate: £3,000 – 5,000).
Jewellery: A superb European-mounted jadeite censer and cover from the collection of Mona Bismark leads the jewellery in the present sale (lot 157, estimate: £10,000 – 15,000). The piece was purchased by the present owner from the sale of the Bismark estate in Monaco in 1986. The original pearl, missing in the Sotheby’s catalogue photograph, was loose and misplaced during viewing. It was replaced shortly after the sale by Boucheron, Paris.
Other interesting lots include a private collection of Indonesian textiles and pieces, including archival material, from the collection of Chinese art dealer Roger Bluett (1925 – 2000).
