A huge collection of local interest postcards has just arrived at Lichfield based Richard Winterton Auctioneers.
The cache of postcards from a local collector consists of approximately 300 early twentieth century scenes of in and around Lichfield and Whittington, depicting popular landmarks and beauty spots.
Postcards are highly collectable, with most sought after being postcards that show “town views” – actual scenes from a particular town or region. Most collectors of town views start by collecting views of the town where they reside or the town where they grew up. With many small towns having hundreds of different cards available, it is an area that can keep a collector busy for years.
The hottest cards on the market in the town view category are real photograph postcards – postcards printed on actual photographic paper using the photographic process rather than printed cards created on a printing press.
A number of artists have become recognised for the creation of postcards and certain publishers specialise in the production and can be highly collectable amongst deltiologists.
The postcard collection at Richard Winterton Auctioneers contains scenes such as Beacon Park, Bird Street, Tamworth Street, The Old St. Chads Well and of course the Lichfield Cathedral – certainly a Lichfieldian’s dream!?
The postcards are due to be sold on 20th January at The Lichfield Salerooms, Cross Keys, Lichfield.
