Largest Bordeaux Auction in the World Brings in Over $6.5 Million with 100% of Lots Sold

(Chicago, IL) – Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. saw record results at its annual Celebration of Bordeaux auction this weekend with a total of over $6.5 million in sales against presale estimates of $4.3 – $6.5 million. Hundreds of bidders from around the globe participated and their aggressive bids drove more than 50% of the 1,975 lots to sell above their high estimates. Bidders clamored over the remarkable treasures in this sale such as an exceedingly rare case of 1961 Château Palmer, which shattered the high estimate, achieving $53,775 (lot 1267, est. $20,000-30,000). These robust results drove Hart Davis Hart’s live auction sales total to over $38 million so far in 2016, solidifying their position as the largest wine auction house in the U.S.

Hart Davis HartThe two-day auction featured an astounding array of Bordeaux from more than 130 châteaux spanning 59 vintages. Several impressive private collections came across the auction block this weekend, most notably An Exceptional Sea Island Collection (lots 217-348) and A Cellar of Legendary Wines with Important Provenance (lots 1221-1366). Mature vintages from these collections were of particular interest to bidders. Twelve bottles of 1989 Château Haut-Brion brought in $21,510 (lot 293, est. $13,000-19,000), a full case of 1959 Château Haut-Brion garnered $47,800 (lot 1244, est. $22,000-32,000, and six magnums of 1982 Château Lafleur sold for $59,750 (lot 297, est. $40,000-60,000). The sale also featured installments from The Fox Cellar and the Josue V. Harari Collection.

In addition to these remarkable private collections, the November auction featured wines direct from the cellars of top châteaux including Haut-Bailly, Léoville Las Cases, Mouton Rothschild, Montrose, and Pichon-Longueville, Lalande. Large format bottlings from these celebrated estates achieved particularly strong results.
