Hart Davis Hart, America’s top wine auction house, continued its strong performance in 2019 with a 100% sold May sale, posting $7.7 million in sales against a pre-auction estimate of $5.0-7.5 million. The sale was Hart Davis Hart’s largest Celebration of Burgundy auction to date, exceeding the previous record by half-a-million. The record-shattering prices confirm both the current strength of the fine wine market and HDH’s standing as the top auction house in the United States.
The two-day auction featured the region’s finest wines, with over 200 Burgundian domaines represented. Over half of all lots exceeded their high estimates, many of which achieved record prices.
As in the past, bidders showed incredible enthusiasm for the sale’s wide array of lots from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Featuring an impressive 73 vintages dating back to 1942 and encompassing all the domaine’s Grand Cru vineyard sites, the sale’s DRC offerings achieved a total of $1.8 million, claiming 9 of the sale’s top 10 lots by value. The jeroboam of 2001 Romanée-Conti shattered world records bringing in $95,600 against pre-sale estimates of $60,000-90,000).
HDH prides itself on representing some of the most knowledgeable and meticulous collectors in the world, and the consignors represented in this sale were no exception. The remarkable provenance and stellar quality of the wines offered throughout the sale attracted fierce bidding from collectors, breaking several world records. 6 bottles of 2014 Romanée-St-Vivant, Domaine Dujac sold for $20,315 (est. $3,800-5,500); 6 bottles of 2010 Chambertin, Domaine Dujac brought in $26,290 (est. $9,500-14,000); and 4 magnums of 2002 Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Prieuré-Roch garnered $14,340 (est. $3,200-4,800).
