Morphy Legend Coin Auction Huge Success

DENVER, Pa. –Morphy Legend Coin Auction’s May 6 sale was a triumphant debut for the Geppi’s Entertainment Publishing & Auctions unit, led by the sale of the rare NGC-graded, CAC-stickered 1876 proof set for $46,000.

The new joint-venture company formed by Morphy Auctions and Legend Numismatics offered a full selection of numismatic rarities ranging from circulated Half Cents to GEM Proof Gold Rarities. This was designed to offer collectors in virtually every price range a chance to acquire historic and important coins and antique currency.

The highlight of the auction was an extraordinarily rare NGC-graded, CAC-stickered 1876 proof set. This set is believed to have been together since 1876 and of the 1,150 sets originally minted, it is doubtful that even a dozen sets survive in any grade. The set included a 1C 65RB, 3CN 66, 5C 65, 10C 67, 20C 66* CAMEO, 25C 67*, 50C 66*CAMEO, $1 65* CAMEO. In total, the 1876 proof set brought in $46,000.00.

Other highlights from the sale include a 1C 1856 FE PCGS PR 65, CAC ($40,250), a 10C 1895-O NGC MS 63 ($10,925), a 50C 1830 NGC AU 58*, CAC ($10,350), a $1 1885 PCGS PR 64 Cameo, CAC ($4,887.50), a $1 1923 NGC MS-62 VAM-1E Broken Wing ($4,887.50), a $2.5 1853 PCGS MS 64, CAC ($2,587.50), a $10 1915-S PCGS AU 58, CAC ($3,680), a $20 1860 PCGS MS 64 ($37,375), and a 50C 1924 Hugenot PCGS MS 67 ($2,990).

Before their next event, Morphy Legend Coin Auctions will be attending two major coin shows, the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectible Expo (May 29-31 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif.) and the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention (June 6-8 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Md.).
