Bonhams Urban Art Sale

monroe.jpgThe strength of Banksy and other ‘grafitti’ artists will be put to the test at Bonhams next Urban Art Sale on 24 February which highlights Marilyn Monroe, Kate Moss and Hurricane Katrina.

Six Kate Moss prints by Banksy estimated to make £100,000 to £150,000 at this Urban Art Sale is one of the top items featured. The six Kate Moss prints by Banksy, after Warhol’s famous image of Marilyn Monroe, were produced in a limited edition of twenty, in six different coloured formats. As most were sold individually, this group, one of the few to remain intact as a complete set, is particularly collectable.

Another iconic image by Banksy offered in the sale is ‘Nola Pink’,

(7824927/1) a unique canvas, depicting a girl being rained upon from beneath her umbrella. It’s title is derived from an abbreviation of New Orleans, Louisiana, and it was one of the series of works that the artist painted in the city to commemorate the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Banksy is quoted as commenting “Three years after Katrina I wanted to make a statement about the state of the clean up operation.”

It is rumoured that the works were also created as a direct response to the anti-graffiti campaigner, the ‘Gray Ghost’, who has been active in the city for the last ten years painting over street art with grey primer.

Gareth Williams, Head of Bonhams Urban Art Department says: “The Urban Art market remains buoyant judging by the interest this sale has aroused once more and we are pleased to continue to offer significant works by the most important artists in this field.”

The auction offers a variety of Urban artists whose works have done well at previous Bonhams sales.
