Bloomsbury to Enter Wine Auction Market

Bloomsbury Auctions, the world’s leading auction house for rare books and works on paper, is adding a division to its New York operations. The company is entering the fast-growing wine auctions segment though a partnership with Sokolin, LLC, America’s premier merchant of fine and rare wine. The inaugural Bloomsbury Wine Auction will be held on Friday, June 19th at Bloomsbury Gallery, located at 6 West 48th Street in New York City.

Bloomsbury Auctions will launch their wine division with a lower buyer’s premium than any other major wine auction house and an unprecedented buyer’s guarantee. The buyer’s premium will be 17% and buyers will have up to six months to return damaged wine and a full year to return their purchase if it does not match the photograph as presented on the Bloomsbury Auctions website.

“We see the wine auction market as a great opportunity for us to continue to grow our business in America,” said Bernard Frelat, CEO – Americas. “Fine wine is a lifestyle item that we know is appealing to our existing clientele of art and rare book collectors, and we are confident that the unique business ethics and product knowledge brought in by Sokolin will allow us to offer a very rewarding buying opportunity to this existing clientele and to all wine lovers in general.”

“We see our role in providing our expertise to Bloomsbury Auctions as a natural extension of what we have been doing already for years in the US market, with a strong focus on wine quality, service excellence and one-on-one consultation for many of the largest wine investors and collectors in the world,” added David Sokolin, President of Sokolin.

Bloomsbury Auctions plans on holding several wine auctions per year, in addition to the regular schedule of sales for books and works of art on paper. Established in London in 1983, Bloomsbury Auctions opened its New York saleroom in 2007, where they hold over 20 sales each year.

Sokolin has been a leading US merchant of fine and rare wine since 1934 and is known for bringing clients the world’s most sought after wines from impossible-to-find back vintage treasures to new releases at the lowest prices in the market place.
