Mayo Auction & Realty, based in Kansas City, will be handling the real estate and equipment portion of the auction, on Thursday, Aug. 20, beginning promptly at 10 a.m.. “Not only is Judy’s D&G a St. Joseph tradition, it is beautifully situated, with a heavy traffic count,” said Robert Mayo of Mayo Auction & Realty. The auction will be conducted at the restaurant itself — at 1918 Frederick Avenue.

Dirk Soulis Auctions, based near Kansas City, will oversee the selling of the vast collection of memorabilia that dotted the walls of the restaurant on Saturday, Aug. 22, also at 11 a.m., with a preview from 9-11. Most of the items were collected by the original owner’s wife, Bessie Glaser, while others were brought in by the current owners, Pete and Pam Miner, who are now retired from the business.

“This is a nice accumulation of breweriana, advertising items and more, and it should appeal to serious collectors as well as nostalgic locals who just want a remembrance of this great old landmark,” said Dirk Soulis of Dirk Soulis Auctions. “Many pieces would be valuable additions to any collection, especially those relating to the M.K. Goetz Brewing Company, which operated locally, in St. Joseph.”

Goetz Brewing Company (circa 1902), one in very good condition and one in exceptional shape, Goetz calendars from around 1915, porcelain signs, rare paper signs and posters, cardboard signs, tin signs, rare St. Joseph artifacts, and early photographs.

Also scheduled to come under the gavel will be vintage movie stills, lobby cards, framed post cards, advertising trays, vintage St. Joseph advertising novelties, boxing memorabilia, reverse painted signs, candy boxes, petroliana (porcelain gas and oil signs), and other items. Dirk Soulis Auctions was selected to oversee this portion of the auction because of its familiarity with antiques and collectibles.

Judy’s D&G Restaurant is located in a commercial area of the city, zoned C-3, with three parking lots in the back plus on-street parking. The building features a banquet hall, four large dining areas, flexible use space, a large kitchen area and the potential for dividing per the wishes and needs of a new owner. “This is an excellent investment opportunity.” Mr. Mayo said, “and it will be sold that day.”

judys-dg-exterior The building totals around 12,000 square feet and sits on about 20,000 square feet of property. It was built around the turn of the last century and was operated initially as a saloon, with no food served. Then, in August of 1945, two brothers-in law – Julius “Judy” Glaser and Isy Daynoski (later shortened to Day) – acquired the business and named it Judy’s D & G (Daynoski & Glaser) Restaurant. The two men split in the 1960s, but Judy Glaser remained on.

The Miners bought the business in the 1970s and successfully ran it until 2003, when they sold it to an investor. The couple resumed control of the operations and successfully ran the business for four years. They listed the property briefly with Realtors, who produced no viable buyers. As a result, they decided to sell the business at auction.

The equipment inside Judy’s is extensive, making it tantalizing for anyone wishing to continue operating the facility as a restaurant. The list includes a True GDM-47 two-glass-doors refrigerator, a Hoshizaki KM-450 MRB ice machine and storage bin, a Manitowoc series 400 ice machine and storage bin, a Beverage Air E-series two-door stainless steel refrigerator, and a Vulcan commercial gas grill.

Other equipment includes a Victory RA-1D-S7-HD refrigerator with one glass and one stainless steel door, a Vulcan commercial oven with 10-burner gas stove, a Magikitchen SMB 36 commercial gas grill, four Frymaster solid-state electric fryers, a Beverage Air E-series stainless steel freezer, a Hobart commercial dishwasher, a Clean Star 2000 large-capacity grease trap, and a Hobart commercial oven.

Also to be offered will be a 1000 I-H commercial oven, a Hobart 1612 ¼-hp slicer, a Hobart 200-ET mixer, a Beverage Air E-series one-door stainless steel freezer, a Kol Pak walk-in refrigerator, an American Panel walk-in refrigerator and freezer, a Kol Pak walk-in freezer, a Thermo-Kool walk-in refrigerator and freezer, a Bird model 33 meat saw, vent hoods, a fire suppression system, and more.

The restaurant also has 57 tables, over 200 chairs, a TEC point-of-sale system with four stations, cash drawers and receipt printers, a butcher block table, an Advance carpet cleaning machine, barstools, reach-in coolers, beer keg coolers, beer taps, a deep well serving station, four-basin bar sink, glass racks, blenders, bar supplies, an Advance three-bin stainless steel wash sink, and a Cres-Cor warming cabinet.
