Winterthur Museum and Country Estate’s Brock Jobe will lecture at Garth’s Auctions of Delaware, Ohio on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 4:00 pm. Jobe, a professor of decorative arts in the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture, will speak on his landmark exhibition and book, Harbor and Home: The Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts, 1710-1850.
Through furniture, Harbor and Home explores the cultural identity of a little-studied region of 18th and 19th century New England: southeastern Massachusetts, an area that stretches from just south of Boston to Providence, east to the tip of Cape Cod, and includes the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The era between 1710 and 1850 was marked by enormous changes in the landscape, population, and economy of this area, as well as in the activities of furniture craftsmen and the purchasing patterns of local residents.
The lecture will be part of the special Sunday preview for Garth’s 49th Annual Thanksgiving Americana Auction, which takes place later the same week on Friday and Saturday, November 27-28. The lecture, for which reservations are requested, will take place in Garth’s saleroom, located at 2690 Stratford Road, Delaware, Ohio.
