A Painting of George Washington that hung for years in a New York home has been sold at Cottone Auctions, for nearly $1 million.
The buyer, a dealer from York County, Pennsylvania paid $925,000 for the Gilbert Stuart painting during Saturday’s bidding in Geneseo. Buyer’s fees of 15 percent pushed the final total for the portrait, to more than $1.06 million. The auctioneers had estimated the painting would fetch between $200,000 and $300,000.
The winning bid was a record breaker for Cottone Auctions. Previously, the most expensive lot sold at the auction house was a James A. McNeill Whistler painting which made $910,000.
