RUSSIAN GRANDEUR COMES TO BELLMANS AUCTION

AN IMPORTANT pair of Russian Imperial Porcelain Vases, dating from the reign of Czar Alexander I (1777-1825) will be offered on the first day of Bellmans three-day sale on Wednesday, May 19, 2010. The sale will take place at Wisborough Green, West Sussex and they vases are estimated at £20,000-30,000.

Measuring 40.5cm high, the vases which date from the end of the Czar’s reign, are in the manner of Swebech had been previously sold at Sotheby’s in April 1983 as part of a Single Owner Collection. Each vase is decorated with oval panels depicting Russian rural life, one showing washerwomen gossiping, the other with two girls on a see-saw watched by a man and a women nursing a baby; while the reverse is decorated with a gilt lyre within a wreath on an eau-de-nil ground.

Managing Director Jonathan Pratt explains: “These wonderful vases were last seen at auction when they were sold in 1983 for £2,700. With inflation, this is the equivalent to £7,000 today, Since the late 1980s, they have been in a private collection and Bellmans are delighted to be selling them. We have estimated them for sale at £20,000 to 30,000 but have expectations that they may exceed the upper estimate. We hope that they will attract a lot of interest. ”

THE NEXT SALE WILL BE ON JUNE 23, 24 & 25
