Gray’s Auctioneers announced their 34th auction 19th and 20th Century European and American Paintings, to be held Thursday July 29 , 2010 at 1 pm. This sale features over 350 lots, with a particularly diverse collection of European, with a concentration of Hungarian artists.
Lots of note include a stunning oil on canvas work by Welsh painter Augustus Edwin John, entitled Portrait of a Woman in a Landscape. Measuring 32.25” by 27”, this large work is indicative of the style that made Augustus John notable within his peers, often drawing comparisons to Gauguin and Matisse. His portrait work is frequently described as catching an instantaneous attitude in his subjects. This, Lot 85, is estimated very conservatively at $10,000 to $15,000.
Representing the diversity available in this sale, are an offering of 4 different oil on canvas works by Hungarian Pal Molnar. (Lots 87, 88, 89 and 90) These works are warm, colorful representations of the Holy Family, and are each estimated at $3,000-$5,000.00
Hungarian outsider artist, Andor Sugar is also represented, with 3 oil on canvas works, each estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

Auction 34 also offers a varied selection of landscape works, with notable pieces including Oil on Canvas work entitled Homewards, by British artist William G. Meadows (Lot 67). This pastoral scene features a beautifully executed English landscape with figures, and is estimated at $2,000 to $4,000.
