Cordier Antiques & Auctions will be offering a rare and important Herter Brothers cabinet as well as a monumental 19th century French enamel and brass automaton singing bird clock and important silver in their Two Day Fall Antique & Fine Art auction in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.
Other highlights include a Steinway baby grand Model S inlaid art case piano, diamond jewelry and collections of shaving mugs, fleams, meerschaum pipes and Mettlach steins. The 600 plus lot auction will be held in Camp Hill, across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg.
Saturday’s sale is slated to offer Paper, Civil War & Military, Jewelry, Silver and Collectibles. Among the Civil War and military items will be an officer’s coat, belt and kepi as well as a pair of original offer’s leather boots, sabers and archives including Ohio Squirrel Hunters and Libby Prison. Other items of note will include a World War II German SS winter cap and an 1864 Lincoln/Johnson campaign ribbon. Paper and Collectibles will include frakturs and Pennsylvania Railroad and Woolworth archives as well as collections of occupational shaving mugs, early fleams and figural meerschaum pipes.
Silver will offer over one hundred lots of quality sterling and plate including teasets, hollowware, flatware and presentation pieces by Tiffany, Kirk, Jacobi & Jenkins, Gorham, Wallace, and Whiting. A key lot is an exceptional S. Kirk & Son sterling punch bowl presented to W. Bladen Lowndes, son of Lloyd Lowndes, Jr. (Governor of Maryland, 1896-1900) by the directors of the First National Bank of Mt. Savage, Maryland in 1911. Mr. Lowndes was the bank’s first president in 1902. The bowl, estimated at $5,000 to $7,000, features ornate repousse overall with cartouches of a town scene of Mt. Savage and the presenters’ names. Other important lots include an Omar Ramsden presentation footed bowl, an S. Kirk & Son sterling repousse coffee and tea service, and a Marquand & Co. coffee pot on stand.
Saturday will conclude with over 80 lots of fine jewelry including diamond, gemstone, gold and Native American. Among several fine diamond rings will be a 3.81 carat round brilliant cut diamond (VS1, I-J) in platinum with side stones (estimated at $15,000 to $30,000) and a 1.4 carat diamond engagement ring (VS1, J). Among gemstones are an 11.16 carat aquamarine ring and a 13.6 carat peridot ring with diamonds. Fine wristwatches will be auctioned including examples by Omega, Patek Philippe and Hamilton as well as pocketwaches including an Illinois Bunn Special.
Sunday’s session will include Fine & Decorative Arts, Ceramics, Furniture, and Clocks. One of the highlights of furniture will be a rare and important Herter Brothers cabinet with inlay and painted panels (estimated at $40,000 to $60,000). Also to be offered will be a New England Federal tiger maple candle stand, a John Jelliff seven piece parlor set and a Thomas Brooks library table. Another important lot to be offered on Sunday will be a monumental French automaton singing bird clock. Standing 38-1/2” high, the clock features an enamel and brass case housing a fully feathered automaton bird above the dial and is estimated at $25,000 to $35,000.
A collection of over twenty Mettlach steins will offered in the Ceramics category as well as a pair of 17th century Italian Urbino Majolica urns decorated with chimeras and a Newcomb College moon and moss vase. Textiles will feature an early 19th century silk and watercolor mourning needlepoint and a schoolgirl embroidered map. A highlight among Musical Instruments is a Steinway baby grand Model S inlaid art case piano (estimate $20,000 to $30,000). Another interesting lot will be a large single owner collection of early Enrico Caruso recordings.
A number of portraits will be part of the Fine Art offerings including a portrait of Lt. William Snow Steele of the Royal American Regiment attributed to Allan Ramsay (English, 1713-1784). Others include a portrait of Mary (Mrs. Michael) Morgan Clayfield attributed to Angelica Kauffman (English, 1741-1807) and a portrait of Sally Kilbourne Hyde (1772-1849) attributed to Erastus Salisbury Field (American, 1805-1900). Among bronzes will be Amazon’s Farewell by Hermann Otto Haese-Ilsenburg (German, 1879-1960) and a sculpture of a goat with two kids by Georges Lucien Vacossin (French, 1870-1942).
A painting by Jackson Pollock’s wife Lee Lenore Krasner (American, 1908-19884) will be offered as will a drawing entitled “Mother Africa” by Horace Pippin (American, 1888-1946) that is noted to have been the property of Bernice Abbott, the American photographer. Other artists to be represented include Ralph Albert Blakelock (American, 1847-1919), John Charles Terelak (American, born 1942), and Van Zeebroeck (Dutch, 19th century). A good selection of prints will be offered including examples by Erte and Icart as well as a collection of over twenty Currier & Ives prints including “Clipper Ship ‘Ocean Express’” and “Ethan Allen and Mate and Dexter”.
