Gateway Gallers Winter Americana Estate Auction

Antiques, Fine China, John Bell Pottery, Vintage Clothing, Dolls, Collectibles and Personal Property

Gateway Gallery’s Winter Americana Estate Auction, February 19, 2011 will feature a wonderful collection of period furniture, textiles, sterling, early medical tools, prints, pottery and ceramics, and ephemera. The 400-plus lot auction will be held at Gateway Gallery’s auction facility in Chambersburg. Of special interest is a rare double stamped John Bell Turks Head Mold. This earthenware mold is typical of Bell’s pottery during 1840-1880; made unique by it’s’ double stamp “John Bell Waynesboro.” Known for his exceptional use of glazes, Bell is a stand-out potter among his nineteenth century Cumberland and Shenandoah Valley peers.

Period furniture has a strong presence in the auction, including a cherry two drawer work table with a three board top in fine condition; a Middleburg, VA buffet; a Chippendale desk; a set of (9) Baltimore-style chairs; and an exceptional apothecary cabinet with the original labels.

A set of early 1800s cast iron American Indian andirons is another highlight of the auction; with one andiron depicting a male native in head-dress and cloak and the other a female in full dress.

A beautifully sewn Sampler dated and signed Sarah Perry 1827 is among the many fine textiles included in the auction. Additionally, there are quilts, needlework pieces, vintage clothing and a dated 1849 Chambersburg coverlet.

Also of interest is a German Simon & Halbig doll. The doll measures 25 inches, has a bisque head with a leather body, sleepy eyes and an open mouth with teeth.

Other highlights include numerous German copper molds; two early American Indian baskets; and a unique primitive mouse trap marked “W. Smith.”

This fine collection of primitives, antiques and collectibles hails from a multi-generational estate out of Fort Loudon, Franklin Co. PA. In addition to the cataloged items, there are hundreds of non-lotted discovery items.
