Jazz, Blues, Folk and Rock & Roll Memorabilia Auction June 11

Phil Weiss Auctions will present a large collection of collections at auction June 11 in Oceanside New York with bidding online and on the phone. Music Memorabilia will be featured.

An 1948 concert program signed in by Armstrong and a 1947 program signed by Gillespie in Boston, a Birdland Menu signed by Charlie Parker and numerous others, plus Nat King Cole, Illinois Jacquet, Stan Kenton, and others.

Concert promotion also evolved, with cardboard posters, along with paper handbills and psychedelic posters. Artists such as James Brown, Sam and Dave and Wilson Pickett toured extensively yet their concert posters are hard to find. The June 11 auction will feature some cardboard posters from Virginia in the 1960s by the Globe Poster Company of Baltimore MD, the preeminent producer of iconic posters of the era.

Even though California is best known for psychedelic concert posters, other areas of the US were having their own “scenes” such as Austin Texas where the Vulcan Gas Company regularly featured bands such as Johnny Winter, Shiva’s Headband, The Fugs and Bubble Puppy with great art by Jim Franklin and others. Many pieces from Texas are highlighted in the June 11 auction including a rare Janis Joplin 1968 appearance at the Hemisfair Theater in San Antonio.

In the rock and roll category, certain groups and artists have maintained the demand for many decades with no end in sight and speculators are currently banking on original first edition items from the artists time-period will continue to rise in value. Groups like The Beatles are mainstays, but we are seeing artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Grateful Dead and The Velvet Underground are finding more demand in the marketplace. A nice selection of investment quality items from these and other 1960s performers can be found in the June 11 auction.

Blues and folk music are well represented and desirable. A hand written note from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Roomful of Blues guitarist Ronnie Earl and Eric Clapton’s handwritten home address along with a signed poster by Roy Brown will be auctioned from the collection of famed guitarist Ronnie Earl. A 1965 Bob Dylan and Joan Baez classic concert poster that hung at Lenny’s On The Pike club will also be auctioned.

A rare collection of 2nd, 4th & 5th Grade Class Photos and Autographs of Billy Joel from Fork Lane School in HIcksville NY will be offered in the auction also. These 3 photos with supporting documentation shows that all the kids in his class thought Billy was going to be a special performer. He is dressed like the perfect schoolboy and looks very much the same. The consignor went to class with Billy.

The auction of music memorabilia and autographs will be part of a large collectors sale which also features sports, books, stamps, historical, comics and comic art collections including 3 original Charles Schulz drawn “Peanuts” daily comic strips pre-sale valued between $10,000 and $20,000 each..
