Rago Announce Folk Art and Americana Collection for December 3

Rago Auctions is proud to announce that it will auction the folk art and Americana collection from Fleecydale Cottage in Carversville, PA on December 3, 2011 at Noon. Bidders will find over 160 lots of American painted furniture, whirligigs, carnival shooting targets and prize figurines, signage, hard-to-find paintings by Amos Shontz, outsider art, garden and architectural ornaments, whimsies and folk carvings, tramp art. Also in the mix are many other unexpected pieces of decorative arts that compliment and diversify the Cottage’s folk art collection, from a fabulously large and ornate wood chandelier in paint to a curious bench reputed to have been created for use in a bordello, Bakelite, framed tattoo art, Deco furniture and accessories.

“This is a fine collection compiled over fifty years by a couple that has a great aesthetic sense matched to a love of whimsy,” said Tom Martin, head of the Estates department at Rago’s. “It’s the kind of property that’s been increasingly hard to find in the market, whether you are a dealer or a collector. It’s colorful, folksy, playful. There’s nothing “brown” about it.”

The owners of Fleecydale Cottage began their collection in the late 1960s and continued to gather through the 1990s, filling their beautiful old Carversville, PA stony, its adjoining cottage and garden. They collected from most of the leading dealers in Americana at the New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware shows, as well through shows, flea markets and dealers in Bucks County, New Jersey, upstate New York and New England. The majority of the pieces have been off the market for decades.

“We loved seeing the heart and hand of the maker,” says the owner. “And we loved finding something fabulous we’ve never seen before. As for the Deco, it’s the style and line and how it mixes with folk. So begin collections.”

The Fleecydale Cottage Collection will be sold on December 3 as part of a three day Great Estates Weekend featuring silver and coins/currency on December 2, estate property on December 3 and jewelry on December 4. Each auction begins at noon. Previews begin on Saturday, November 26 at noon. The catalogue is online at ragoarts.com from November 14. Print catalogues for each sale day are also available.

Rago Auctions is located at 333 North Main Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530. For more information, or to order a catalogue, please call 609.397.9374 or e-mail [email protected].
