A wonderfully evocative painting of a typically Scottish winter scene by the distinguished Scottish painter, James McIntosh Patrick, is for sale at Bonhams Pictures sale in Edinburgh on 8 December.
The picture, estimated at £20,000 – 30,000, shows the snow-strewn Sidlaws from Birkhill, Angus just west of Patrick’s native Dundee. Patrick was born there in 1907 and after training at Glasgow School of Art established himself in the 1930s as Scotland’s foremost traditional landscape painter.
Another of Patrick’s work in the sale, Sheep Farm on the Braes of Breadalbane, is a perfect example of the influence on the artist of the Flemish 16th century master Pieter Brueghel the Elder, in particular his famous work ‘Hunters in the Snow.’ It is estimated at £5,000-7,000.
