1841 Sovereign Makes New World Record at Bonhams

An 1841 Sovereign made a new world record when it is sold for £34,800, over three times the presale estimate, in the Medals, Banknotes and Coins sale on Wednesday 14th December at Bonhams, Knightsbridge.

Estimated to sell for £8,000- 10,000, the coin depicted Queen Victoria, in relief, and had been virtually uncirculated. It is considered on of the finest 1841 Sovereigns in existence and examples of early shields such as this are particularly rare at auction. After much enthusiastic bidding both on the telephone and in the room, the highly sought after sovereign sold to a private collector in the UK.
