(ST. CHARLES, Mo.) – Nearly 450 lots of highly collectible American Brilliant Cut Glass, drawn from several important collections consigned from around the country, will be sold Saturday, Jan. 21, by Woody Auction, at the St. Charles Convention Center, starting at 9:30 a.m. (CST). The auction will be held in the Convention Center’s upper level of Grand Ballroom A.
Headlining the event will be the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Toney of North Carolina; select items from the Dr. and Mrs. Loren Hart collection of Wisconsin; and stunning highlights from the collection of Burton and Eleanor Gale of St. Louis. A preview will be held on Friday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m. Internet bidding will be provided by Proxibid.com/woodyauction.
Certain to generate tremendous bidder interest will be a monumental matched pair of mushroom lamps in the full Harvard cut pattern (each one 23 inches by 14 inches); an 8-inch Straus cranberry to clear ball-shaped water pitcher in the Wales pattern by Clark; and a rare 8-inch signed Hawkes panel pattern low bowl with outstanding blank, coloring and cutting.
ABCG vases will feature a 12-inch, four-footed, two-handled oval vase with hobstar, strawberry, diamond, star and fan motif, sporting triple-notched handles; a 16-inch tulip-shaped vase with large hobstar columns with notching highlights and a huge faceted cut knob stem; and an exceedingly rare 12-inch bowling pin-shaped vase in the Columbia pattern by Blackmer.
Expected stars of the bowls category include a 4 inch by 5 inch rose bowl in the Wheat pattern by J. Hoare; a nice square-shaped bowl in the Chicago pattern by Fry; and a signed Hawkes rolled rim bowl in the Queens pattern, with great blank and cutting. Also sold will be a squat-shaped water pitcher in the Niagra pattern with triple notched handle and long spout.
Two lots are guaranteed to illuminate the room. The first is a rare pair of 17 inch by 12 inch three-arm candelabra in the Brazilian pattern by Hawkes (once featured on the cover of the 1988 catalog for the Harry Kraut Collection, also sold by Woody Auction). The other is a fine pair of 8-inch Pitken & Brooks candlestick holders in the Rajah pattern, with a pattern cut base.
Cookies and coffee, anyone? Offered will be a beautiful 10-inch corset-shaped cookie jar with complete hobstar, nailhead diamond and lattice design, pattern cut lid and a large hobstar base; and a rare 5-inch pedestal plantation-size creamer and sugar with a hobstar, strawberry diamond, small vesica and fan motif, perfect double-notched handles and fine hobstar base.
A two-part pedestal punch bowl with hobstar, strawberry diamond, nailhead diamond and vesica motif and pattern-cut pedestal was featured on the front cover of the 1993 Kimberling Cut Glass Collection (sold by Woody Auction). Also offered will be a rare 9 inch by 9 inch footed trough-shaped basket in the Russian pattern, with hobstar cut buttons and facet-cut ball feet.
Trays will include a wonderful 16 ½ inches by 9 ½ inches rectangular tray in the Parisian pattern by Dorflinger; and a rare 14 inch by 6 inch ‘Fish’ tray having a hobstar center with strawberry diamond and nailhead diamond highlights and four engraved fish scenes. Also sold will be a 9-inch humidor with deeply cut hobstar, cane, strawberry diamond and vesica motif.
Rounding out the list of anticipated top lots are an outstanding 16 inch by 12 inch oval low serving dish with elaborate Gorham sterling reticulated border; a 14 inch by 10 inch signed Hawkes serving tray in the Aberdeen pattern, with thick and clear blank; and a nice pair of 10 ½ inch cut glass handled ewers with hallmarked embossed silver spouts and cane pattern cut motif.
