(ST. CHARLES, Mo.) – Woody Auction will ring in the New Year with a sale packed with over 400 lots of American Brilliant Cut Glass on Saturday, March 2, in Grand Ballroom A of the St. Charles Convention Center. The auction will begin at 9:30 a.m. (CST), with a preview on Friday, March 1, from 4-6 p.m. Internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com.

“Nothing kick-starts a New Year like a wonderful American Brilliant Cut Glass auction,” said Jason Woody of Woody Auction, based in Douglass, Kan. “Many fantastic and unique items will be offered throughout the day, and a highlight will be the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Dudgeon. Serious collectors should make plans to attend this auction, either in person or online.”

Four-drawer cherry stemware chest with 69 rock crystal stems, bought from a Sinclaire relative.

Four lots in particular are expected to generate keen bidder interest. The first is a rare and magnificent turquoise cut to clear claret jug attributed to J. Hoare. The 16-inch jug boasts an embossed Gorham sterling spout with hinged lid, a pattern cut handle and a modified Russian zipper and pillar swirl motif. “This is an exciting rarity, highly collectible,” Mr. Woody said.

The second is a first-ever offering from Woody Auction: an original four-drawer cherry stemware chest, stocked with 69 rock crystal stems in Pattern #105 (as featured in Sinclaire, Vol. I, page 24). The chest and its contents were purchased directly from a Sinclaire relative, giving the lot an impeccable provenance. The glass lid on top of the chest lifts to reveal a mirrored base.

The third is a gorgeous 14 inch by 15 inch signed Libbey punch bowl set in the extremely rare Aztec pattern. The set consists of a two-part punch bowl with 12 handled punch cups and matching ladle. The fourth is the finest rose bowl Woody Auction has ever offered: a massive 7 ½ inch by 10 inch signed Libbey bowl cut in the Emmerson pattern designed by W.C. Anderson.

Two other lots also deserve special mention. One is an exquisite 12 ½ inch signed Tuthill round tray in the Rex pattern, exhibiting an exceptionally clear blank. The other is a beautiful 12-inch signed Libbey round tray in the Delphos pattern, with a brilliant blank and superb cutting.

Trays will feature a lovely 11-inch signed Hawkes round tray in the Panel pattern, in excellent condition; and a 13 ¼ inch round tray in a rare unnamed pattern, with six 7-inch plates and having a flashed hobstar center surrounded by interlocking vesicas featuring cane and diamond point highlights with a clear jeweled center. The tray is in great shape, with fine blank.

Wine lovers will be dazzled by the rare 4 ¼ inch cranberry cased wine glass having deep hobstar buttons with fan highlights and a hobstar base. And speaking of alcohol, also sold will be a three-bottle tantalus set (a lockable case or stand, holding decanters of alcoholic beverages), with six shot glasses, square bottles cut in the Savoy pattern and marked Dorflinger oak frame.

Libbey bowls will include a scarce 4 ¼ inch by 8 ¾ inch bowl in the Columbia pattern and an equally rare 4 ½ inch by 6 inch signed tazza (shallow bowl of wide form, standing on a footed stem) in the Aztec pattern, with petticoat hobstar base having one scallop with a tiny nick. Also offered will be a beautiful and rare 7-inch signed Libbey square plate in the Aztec pattern.

Rounding out just some of the day’s expected top lots are a 5 inch by 11 inch bowl by J. Hoare (Pattern #5353), with an inch-thick blank and three layers of glass, making it outstanding; and a 14 ¾ inch by 15 inch signed Fry two-part pedestal punch bowl in the beautiful Chicago pattern, with brilliant blank, fine cutting, elegant shape and six matching pedestal punch cups.

Phone and absentee bids will be accepted. All absentee bids should be submitted with a written statement indicating the amount of the bid. These must be received no later than noon Thurs., Feb. 28. Bids may be fax’d to (316) 746-2145, or e-mailed to [email protected]. A sales tax of 7.45% will be collected on all purchases (current sales tax numbers are exempt).
