With a strong tradition of offering the world’s greatest supercharged Mercedes, Bonhams is proud to announce that it will be representing the stunningly beautiful and highly sough-after 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A at its approaching Scottsdale Sale.
The rare pre-War supercharged convertible with coachwork by the Sindelfingen works is a marvel of engineering, garnering praise from period reviews in magazines The Autocar and Motor. Painfully expensive when new, they were only available to the wealthiest of society and over the subsequent decades recognition of the car’s impressive mechanical prowess and craftsmanship has only grown to the point that today it is one of the most respected automobiles of its kind.
Providing 115hp un-supercharged and 180hp with the kompressor engaged, and achieving 110mph, the straight 8-cylinder car is meant for performance as much as looks and comfort.
The Cabriolet A is the most desirable of the Cabriolet series. Its smaller cockpit is sportier and accentuates the hood length, emphasizing its rakish profile. These and other distinct design details make the 540K A the most esthetically pleasing coachwork designs of the pre-War era.
This particular example is also extremely authentic and correct, benefitting from its original color scheme, original leather, and rare period features such as round-faced Becker Radio, fabric radiator cover and fold-away luggage rack, among others.
This magnificent German motorcar will be offered along many more newsworthy cars on Thursday, January 17th at Bonhams’ second annual Scottsdale Auction at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona. Please note, the automobilia sale commences at 10:30am and the automobiles at 1:00pm.
