An antique bed made of solid oak was one of the highlights at a three-day auction held between Christmas and New Year.
Lot 1528, a double size oak panelled tester bed, (which was no sleeper) was offered by Richard Winterton Auctioneers in a special three-day auction in Lichfield. Much of the sale comprised contents from a 16c local cottage and other local estates and private entries.
Dating from the 17c with later alterations/additions, it conjures up a typical Christmas image such as from a Dickens novel, (especially once the drapery and bedding has been re-instated). It totalled over £1k and was purchased by a delighted local private client in the room who fought off four telephone bidders to secure it.
Other highlights in the sale included a rare miner’s safety lamp at £500 and a pair of Victorian Staffordshire chimney dogs holding flower baskets at over £400.
Richard Winterton comments;
‘The sale between Christmas and New Year was yet again a great success. We logged a record number of clients, existing and new coming in to have a look and join in the excitement of not only viewing but also buying at auction. The furniture sale last Friday (30th) was the busiest day. A packed saleroom with standing room only, it was encouraging to see a wide age range too. Complimentary mince pies and champagne were on offer and also proved a big hit!’
The next three-day Antique, Twentieth Century & Collectors’ Sale is 25th – 27th January, (with ITV filming ‘Dickinson’s Real Deal’ on the 26th). Final entries are now being invited. Contact the auctioneers for further information on 01543 251081.
