(Chicago, IL) – Hart Davis Hart conducted an auction in Chicago on Saturday devoted exclusively to the wines of Burgundy and achieved astonishing results. “A Celebration of Burgundy” attracted bidders from all around the world, and the auction was 100% sold. At the end of the day $3,986,424 had been realized against a pre-sale estimate of $2,391,750-$3,575,890.
The saleroom at award-winning TRU Restaurant was bristling with activity, full of spirited bidders in attendance from all over the U.S. including the East and West Coasts, as well as Brazil, Canada, France, and Singapore. Selections of DRC, Leroy, Coche-Dury, and Rousseau brought particularly intense bidding and many prices soared above the high end of the auction estimates. Notably, a jeroboam of 1990 La Tâche, DRC was hammered down at more than double the high estimate, bringing $41,825 against an estimate of $12,000-$18,000. This rare bottle was purchased by the consignor in 1993 for $949.99, providing a return of 4400%. A three-bottle offering of the 2005 Musigny from Domaine Leroy commanded $16,730 against a pre-auction estimate of $6,000-$9,000.
Eager bidders participated from 30 states and the District of Columbia, as well as Puerto Rico, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. HDHLive continues to be a popular live internet bidding platform, with eager participants from around the world bidding against an active room.
“The success of the day went beyond DRC as prices across the board were strong in places like Chablis and Volnay, as well as for the Grand Cru offerings. The outpouring of bids from around the globe was the strongest we have seen in some time,” remarked CEO Paul Hart.
