(Chicago, IL) – Hart Davis Hart closed the first half of the year with a successful two-day auction this weekend, realizing $4,298,523 against a pre-sale estimate of $3,008,470-$4,298,523. Bidders participated from 36 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, as well as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
Bidding for Burgundy was especially strong, with four bottles of 1980 Nuits-St.-Georges, Meurgers, Heni Jayer (estimate $2,400-$3,500) realizing $7,767.50, and a case of 1993 Echézeaux, Henri Jayer for Georges Jayer (estimate $15,000-$22,000) realizing $23,900.
“The market for top Burgundy remains strong and will continue to grow, given the limited quantities,” commented CEO Paul Hart.
In addition to the popular Bordeaux and Burgundy offerings, Hart Davis Hart sold 57 lots of Guigal’s single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie. This large collection totaling 666 bottles with vintages ranging from 1989 to 1999 realized a total of $301,499.
In the first half of 2012, Hart Davis Hart sold $14,962,731 over four auctions with a combined pre-sale estimate of $10,243,880-$15,286,208. Three of the four auctions were 100% sold, with the third sale at 99.9% by lot. With a mere 11 lots passing since 2010, the firm’s sell-through rate remains the highest in the industry – an important indicator of Hart Davis Hart’s ability to reach a global audience of top wine buyers.
Hart Davis Hart’s 2012 auctions will resume in the fall, with a spectacular sale on the weekend of September 15.
