Bonhams October auction of Chinese decorative art

Bonhams announce its Asian Decorative Arts auction in San Francisco, taking place Wednesday, October 9 at 10 am.

The auction will include more than 500 lots of predominantly Chinese decorative art and paintings – but also featuring artwork from Japan, India and Southeast Asia. Many of the items, which have not been seen on the open market for decades, were drawn from private collections, estates and institutions, including items from the estates of George H. Taber of Pittsburgh, Joseph A. Donohoe V. of San Francisco, and General Robert G. Fergusson of Pebble Beach. There will also be offerings from the Portland Art Museum and the collections of Dr. Stephen Chase and General and Mrs. John K. Singlaub, acquired in China during the late 1940s.

Just one of the many highlights from the sale will be a group of Chinese enameled vessels, which are sure to appeal to collectors from Asia as well as North America and Europe. The sale will also feature a number of porcelain vessels, primarily from the Qing dynasty/Republic period of various forms and styles.

In addition to a variety of jades and hardstone carvings, numerous lots of Chinese paintings and calligraphic works will be on offer, as well as many examples of furniture, textiles and other works of Chinese art.
For lovers of Japanese art, the sale will feature vessels displaying the high level of quality in metal work for which the Japanese are well regarded. For enthusiasts of Japanese porcelain a group of three Hizen ware porcelain chargers, including a beautiful Meiji period example decorated in the Imari pallete from the collection of Mark Stevenson of Oregon, will surely be a welcome sight.

In addition, there will be exciting works from Southeast Asia, Korea and the Himalayas.

The sale’s illustrated catalog will be available online several weeks in advance of the auction at www.bonhams.com/auctions/21008/.
