The Suzy Menkes Collection Of Clothing And Accessories To Go Under the Hammer

A collection of vintage clothing and accessories from the personal wardrobe of fashionista’s favourite, and International Vogue Editor, Suzy Menkes, will go under the hammer as part of Roseberys June Fine Art sale on Tuesday 24th June.

Roseberys’ head of fashion and textiles, Richard Gibbon, said: “Suzy has been at the heart of the fashion business for her entire career, and this collection features garments which exemplify the styles of the times from the 1960s right through to the 2000s. From Bill Gibb, Biba and Ozzie Clark to Janice Wainwright, Chanel, Yves St Laurent to English Eccentrics and Christian Lacroix, many of the brightest and best designers of their times are featured in this exciting collection.”

British born Menkes graduated from Cambridge University where she read history and English literature and had been the first female editor of the university’s newspaper. She began her career as a journalist writing for The Times of London, The Independent and The London Evening Standard, before making her name in the fashion world as style editor for The International Herald Tribune, now The International New York Times, a position she has held since 1988.

Reflecting the unique style of one of the most prominent figures in the fashion world, the collection of 67 lots contains a variety of accessories and clothing with estimates ranging from an affordable £80-100 for a Janice Wainwright printed silk chiffon kaftan style dress, [Lot 927] to £400-600 for a stylish black Channel leather vanity case. [Lot 873]

Other highlights include a 1990s Yohji Yamamoto black wool long-line fitted collarless jacket, estimated to sell for £120-180, [Lot 907] and a Christian Lacroix swing coat and dress of fuchsia pink wool, estimated at £150-250. [Lot 890]
