Sale to Highlight Innovations and New Leaders in the Historic Region
Including Wines Directly From: Cheval Blanc, Montrose, Pichon Lalande The Fox Cellar The Dr. Robert Shoemaker Collection
(Chicago, IL) – HDH is excited to announce a special auction, A Celebration of Bordeaux, on October 31st and November 1st dedicated solely to the enduring wines of Bordeaux. The auction will feature over 1450 lots, including consignments direct from châteaux Montrose, Pichon Lalande and Cheval Blanc, and is estimated to bring in $3.7-5.5 Million.
For centuries, Bordeaux has been the principal region represented in the world’s greatest cellars and offered in the world’s most important auctions. The wines are distinctive and complex, have almost indefinite longevity, and a pedigree that dates back centuries. They are the definition of blue chip.
As the wine market and wine prices have changed over the last decade, there have also been big changes in Bordeaux where a new generation of leaders is taking over the winemaking process—leaders who respect tradition, but don’t consider themselves bound by it. They are shaking things up in the vineyard and the winery. They bring new ideas and energy to a region that really has become the leader in innovation, in spite of its traditionalist reputation.
HDH’s A Celebration of Bordeaux auction will introduce you to some of those new faces while highlighting the developments in winemaking and the large investments the estates have made in their facilities. The sale will feature wines direct from the cellars of three châteaux leading the innovation charge: Château Cheval Blanc, Château Montrose, and Château Pichon-Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande. These ex-châteaux offerings will be supplemented by wines from some of the greatest private collections in the world. The crux of these private consignments is a 586 lot consignment from the historic Fox Cellar, which will feature over 100 lots of First Growths, and more than 200 lots awarded 99 or 100 point scores by Robert Parker.
Highlights of the sale will include:
• Wines from more than 100 châteaux
• 44 vintages represented dating from 1928 including historic vintages such as 1928, 1945, 1949, 1959, 1961, and 1982, among others
• 97 lots from the 1982 vintage (estimated at $325K – $490K)
• 337 lots from the 2009 vintage (estimated at $1.0 – $1.5M)
• 322 lots of first growth Red Bordeaux (estimated at $1.5M – $2.2M), spanning 35 vintages
• 33 lots of Petrus, spanning 21 vintages (estimated at $330K – $485K)
• 64 lots with wines of imperial size or greater
In conjunction with the sale, HDH will host our annual Comparative Bordeaux tasting on October 30th. During the auction, guests will bid on these phenomenal wines while sampling Bordelais-inspired cuisine prepared by Anthony Martin, TRU’s award-winning chef.
HDH’s Bordeaux sale has been designed to highlight the finest available wines from the region in terms of quality and provenance. We happily invite drinkers, connoisseurs, collectors, and investors to bid with confidence in both the caliber of the wines, and their enduring power for the future.
The auction will take place at Chicago’s award-winning restaurant, TRU, beginning promptly at 9:00 a.m. (CT) on Friday, October 31 & Saturday, November 1, 2014. TRU is located at 676 N. St. Clair Street in Chicago, just one block East of Michigan Avenue. Attendance at the sale is open to the public and free of charge.
