Hart Davis Hart, America’s #1 Wine Auction House, followed up its blockbuster February auction with a highly-charged 100% sold April sale, posting $9.5 million in sales against a pre-auction estimate of $6.0-9.0 million.

Encyclopedic offerings of the finest Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and New World wines from top vintages sold for remarkable prices at the two-day auction, which took place in Chicago. The Friday session offered an impeccable parcel of 19th century Madeira which performed particularly well. Nearly all of the lots exceeded their high estimates, including three bottles of 1900 Malvazia Madeira, Leacock’s which garnered $3,824 (est. $1,100-1,700) and two bottles of 1846 Verdelho Madeira, Bottled by Avery’s which sold for $3,107 (est. $700-1,000). Top California wines including those from Dominus, Harlan, Screaming Eagle, Sine Qua Non saw equally high demand. 12 bottles of 1991 Dominus sold for $7,170 (est. $2,600-3,800), while a single magnum of 2015 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon garnered $8,365 (est. $4,800-7,500). Mature Bordeaux fared well with a full case of 1996 Château Léoville Las Cases selling for $5,975 (est. $2,600-3,800) and a single magnum of 1961 Château Calon-Ségur bringing in $2,629 (est. $550-850). Altogether, Red Bordeaux brought in a total of $485,000 against pre-sale estimates of $290,000-435,000.

Bidders in the April auction also took advantage of the opportunity to bring home lots from The Important Cellar of a Philanthropist. The collection brought in a total of $6.2 million against a pre-sale estimate of $3.9-5.9 million. Demand was high for the impeccable Burgundy offered, with over half of the lots selling above their high estimate. Several lots broke records this weekend including 12 bottles of 1996 Vosne-Romanée, Cros Parantoux, Réserve Henri Jayer, Henri Jayer which sold for $119,500 (est. $60,000-90,000) and a 12 bottle 2000 DRC Assortment which brought in $59,750 (est. $30,000-45,000). Demand was strong for the parcel of Château d’Yquem offered, with nearly all lots selling above their midpoint estimate and 84% selling above their high estimate. 12 bottles of 1975 Château d’Yquem brought in $13,145 (est. $5,500-8,500), a Nebuchadnezzar (15L) of the 2007 vintage sold for $8,962 (est. $3,000-4,500), and a single bottle of 1939 Château d’Yquem sold for a record $3,585 (est. $900-1,400).

The April auction welcomed feverish participation from collectors worldwide. Bidders drove over 67% of all lots in the sale to exceed their high estimates. These impressive results solidified Hart Davis Hart’s position as the foremost wine auction house in the U.S.

“We take pride in having the most accurate auction estimates in the business, so when those estimates are exceeded, it speaks to great demand,” remarked CEO Paul Hart. “These results demonstrate the continued strength and vitality of the wine market, and I advise collectors to explore the benefits of selling wine through HDH.”

Hart Davis Hart’s next sale will take place the weekend of May 18th and will be devoted exclusively to the sale of finest Burgundy. The company is accepting consignments for their upcoming June and summer auctions; please contact [email protected] for more information.
