Starting 2022 Strong: Hart Davis Hart Far Surpasses Estimates at January’s Fine & Rare Sale

Hart Davis Hart’s January Auction of Fine & Rare Wines realized over $4 million and achieved a 100% sell through rate of over 3300 lots, continuing the incredible successes of 2021 into the new year! This is an exciting era for bidders and consigners alike at HDH auction, and the market is holding as strong as we’ve ever seen.

Bidding was active and exciting throughout this two-day auction, with nearly 20,000 bids in total, driving prices to 148% over the low estimate. Champagne and Burgundy were the most competitive categories of the sale, frequently bringing in upwards of 30 bids on a single lot. January’s star performer was Lot 402, the 2011 Vosne-Romanée, Beaux Monts (2 bs) from Domaine Leroy, which commanded the highest per bottle price of the sale, bringing in $4,481 per bottle.

The wines of California comprised a major portion of this sale, represented by 6600 bottles across 864 lots. Realm Cellars, Dominus, and Spottswoode performed exceptionally well across all vintages. Multiple lots of 2015 Realm Cellars, The Patron (Lots 284-286) hammered at an average over 200% to the low estimate. Additional highlights included Lot 2181, a 2012 horizontal of Abreau wines, which sold for $4,541, and Lot 297, a 5 bottle vertical of Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon in magnum which added $3,824 to the sales total on day one.

Outside of California, vintage Champagne performed well from Dom Pérignon, Salon, and all the top tier producers. Not to be overlooked was the rarely seen 1971 Comtes de Champagne from Taittinger, 2 bottles of which sold for $,2629 – an astonishing 275% to the low estimate.

Bordeaux was a major player as always, and the nearly 5000 bottles spread over 582 lots realized a strong 68% over the pre-sale low estimate. Standout lots included lot 1321, a single bottle of 1982 Château Latour that sold for $3,346 against pre-sale estimates of $1,200-1,800, and lot 2164, two bottles of 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild, which brought in $3,824, 88% above estimates of $1,700-2,600.

During the marathon two-day, 3300+ lot sale, our auctioneers were kept busy by a huge audience of bidders tuning in from all over the world. Facilitated by HDH’s industry leading platform, collectors were active and energized through this incredible depth of wine. We’re excited for this momentum to continue into the spring.
