Bonhams Appoints Deborah Coy Director for New York European Paintings Department

Bonhams New York is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Deborah Coy as Director European Paintings.

Being the only auction house to offer European Paintings specialists in New York, Los Angeles, as well as San Francisco, Coy’s role is dynamic as well as vital to Bonhams’ continued expansion in the US market.

deborah-coyWith a career spanning nearly three decades, Deborah Coy is unquestionably amongst the most highly respected people in the auction industry.

Holding a B.A., Art History from Wellesley College (Massachusetts); an M.A., Art History from Williams College (Massachusetts); as well as a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law (Pennsylvania) Coy was uniquely prepared to take on the role of Vice-President, Director of Sotheby New York’s Appraisal Company in 1984. A mere four years after this she was named Vice-President, Senior Specialist, Old Master Paintings of the Christies London, thus beginning a 20 year period with the auctioneers. During her time with Christie’s she became integral to the organization, going on to take the role of Vice-President, Senior Fine Arts Appraiser, Estates and Appraisals Department and, ultimately, Senior Vice –President, Head of Department, 19th Century European Art Senior Director, 19th Century European Art, the Americas. In this, which she held from 2003 until joining Bonhams this month, she was credited with quadrupling sales and reinstituting the highly successful Orientalist category as a separate sale.

In her new role with Bonhams she will work closely with Mark Fisher (Los Angeles), Jannelle Snape (San Francisco), and Caroline Oliphant (London) as well as their respective teams in those cities.
