Sotheby’s to Auction Two Private American Wine Collections in Hong Kong

Sotheby’s will offer two superb American single-owner Wine collections in Hong Kong, on 3 and 4 October 2009. Building upon the success of the spring 2009 two-part single-owner sale of The Classic Cellar from a Great American Collector on 3 October as well as An Exceptional Cellar from a Private American Collector on 4 October. Sotheby’s will also introduce the combination of online bidding with a live video and audio feed for its Hong Kong wine sales – a service that was launched in June 2009 in New York and met with an extremely enthusiastic response among bidders from around the world. The sales are estimated to bring HK$20/29 million (US$2.5/3.5 million) and HK$13/19 million (US$1.5/2.5 million) respectively. The two sales are estimated to bring a combined total of HK$33/48 million (US$4/6 million).

The Classic Cellar from a Great American Collector III, 3 October Serena Sutcliffe, MW, International Head of Wine at Sotheby’s, said, “We are delighted to bring to you the second sale in Hong Kong of The Classic Cellar from a Great American Collector. The charge is led by a phenomenal array of First Growths and their Right Bank siblings, Pétrus and Cheval Blanc, followed by those great Châteaux that are snapping at their heels, wines such as La Mission Haut Brion and Léoville Lascases. It is a privilege to offer this diversity of vintages, some ready to drink and others more suitable for laying down, as well as such a range of bottle sizes, giving everyone wines for every kind of event. There are real jewels in the crown here, such as 1928, 1959, 1961 and large format 1982s, where all our usual criteria to ensure condition and authenticity come into play. At the other end of the time spectrum, there are stunning 2000s and 2005s whose progress can be ‘followed’ throughout their adult life, which is wine-speak for constant sampling to see how they develop.”

An Exceptional Cellar from a Private American Collector, 4 October Serena Sutcliffe, MW, International Head of Wine at Sotheby’s, said of An Exceptional Cellar from a Private American Collection, “This magnificent collection truly represents one-stop shopping for wine classicists. This collection also includes one of the most impressive line-ups of Romanée Conti itself, with its magical, virtually mystical character – the finish of this wine, of whatever vintage, is a world unto itself. As a confirmed Burgundy lover, the owner of this collection, quite naturally, also appreciates the qualities of de Vogüé’s Musigny Vieilles Vignes and this is a magnificent opportunity to acquire some of the best vintages made of this iconic wine. We rarely see such a run of both Châteaux Lafite and Latour in any one cellar and the different bottle formats give great flexibility of choice. In fact, all the First Growths vie for your attention in this sale, closely followed by such giants as La Mission Haut Brion and Trotanoy and the superb Pétrus.
