On the 19th May, Bonhams will hold its third London sale of 2011 at New Bond Street, which will feature an eclectic selection of fine and rare wines, both ancient and modern.
The top lot of the sale is eleven bottles of La Tache 1978, Domaine de la Romanee Conti (estimate £18,000-22,000), from a private Swedish cellar, which has also yielded, amongst other interesting wines, an assortment of 1989 Romanee Conti and 3 magnums of Chateau Cheval Blanc 1982 (estimate £3,400-4,000).
Rare old clarets are a special feature of this sale – five bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1948 (estimate £3,000-4,000) come from the estate of the late Sir Stephen and Lady Spender. There are also several fine Pomerols from a Belgian cellar, including Vieux Chateau Certan from 1945, 1950 and 1955 vintages, bought by the vendor’s father direct from the proprietor, Georges Thienpont.
There are also many old vintages of Chateau Latour – 1945, 1950, 1953, 1959, Chateau Lafite – 1952, 1953, 1955, Chateau Mouton Rothschild – 1949, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961 and Chateau d’Yquem – 1945, 1959, 1962 and 1967.
Another private collection, cellared at the Wine Society since purchase, includes case lots of Latour 1983 (estimate £2,000-2,600) and 1985 (£3,000-3,600), Lafite 1985 (£5,000-6,000), Margaux 1985 (£3,000-3,600), Haut-Brion 1986 (£2,400-3,000) and Mouton Rothschild 1986 (£6,000-7,000). From the cellar at Lincoln’s Inn are offered case lots of Chateau Gruaud Larose 1982 (estimate £2,000-2,600), Le Gay 1982 (£1,200-1,500), Chateau de Beaucastel 1989 (£800-1,000), Fonseca 1963 (£1,200-1,500) and 1970 (estimate £800-900).
More recent clarets are well-represented with parcels of Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1995, Lynch-Bages 1995, Ducru Beaucaillou 1995 (all estimated at £900-1,100 per dozen) from a private cellar in the West Country.
A fine selection of Grand and Premier Cru red and white Burgundy include La Romanee 2003 (estimate £3,600-4,200) and Chambertin 2004 (£700-800) from Bouchard Pere & Fils and Bonnes Mares 2004 (£700-800), Echezeaux 2004 (£600-700) and Chevalier Montrachet, Les Demoiselles 2004 (£1,500-1,800) and 2006 (£1,700-2,000) from Louis Jadot.
Dominus estate in California was created by Christian Moueix of Petrus fame and there are nine vintages of Dominus and eight vintages of the second wine, Napanook, on offer. As usual, the sale also includes a good selection of more modestly priced wines, vintage Port and Cognac.
Bonhams next sale on 7th July will feature an extensive collection of fine Italian wine.
