Cordier Antiques & Auctions Catalog Auction June 11 & 12

Cordier Antiques & Auctions will be holding their Two Day Spring Antique & Fine Art auction in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania on June 11 and 12. Highlights of the sale include a 19th century French tric trac gaming table, a 1920’s Acoma Pueblo olla, and a Ben Franklin 20 shilling Pennsylvania note in addition to a lorgnette collection, diamond jewelry, and fine, Asian, ethnographic and Native American art. The 750 plus lot auction will be held in Camp Hill, across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg.

Saturday’s sale is slated to offer books and paper, jewelry, silver, decorative arts, textiles and lighting. Among paper will be a rare Benjamin Franklin 20 shilling Pennsylvania note, the first to use Franklin’s invention of “nature printing” from leaf casts intended to prevent counterfeiting (estimate $1,000-$2,000). Among ephemera will be an April 1865 edition of The Evening Telegraph announcing the Death of President Lincoln, as well as an 1859 Declaration of Independence broadside and a collection of Vigo Bay Treasure Company stock certificates and bonds. Three 1903 Frank Lloyd Wright Wasmuth prints are also included in the sale.

In books, a ten volume 1897 Mikado Edition printing of Japan: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese edited by Captain F. Brinkley will be offered as will a 1902 ten volume Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe. A selection of autographed items will include Neil Armstrong and a book signed by all six of the Rockefeller brothers. In the area of military will be a Pennsylvania family Civil War archive that includes a presentation cavalry sword and soldier’s coat. A gold and enameled Order of Franz Joseph commander cross will also be offered.

Among collectibles will be a Wurlitzer Model 1015 juke box and a 5 cent Watling Baby Lincoln slot machine as well as a Blaupunkt “Hawaiian” model console hi-fi and a circa 1880 Western Union Telegraph Co. stock ticker tape manufactured by T.A. Edison. A unique offering will be two window displays reported to have been used at Macy’s New York for their annual Kentucky Derby window decorations. Circa 1950 to 1960, the two female displays sport large elaborately designed hats.

Over fifty lots of silver will be offered and include a large selection of Mexican sterling. Of note is a sterling hot water kettle on stand by A. Torres (estimate $2,000-$4,000). Pieces by Maciel, Sanborns and Los Castillos are also included. Other highlights include a large Hanau 800 silver reticulated bowl by J.D. Schleissner and a five piece Chinese Export 90% silver tea set as well Judaica, Tiffany, flatware sets and silver plate.

Saturday will include over 100 lots of fine jewelry including diamond, gemstone, gold, Mexican and Native American. Among many fine pieces of diamond jewelry are 6.24 and 4.36 ctw brooches and a 2.06 ctw cocktail ring. Gemstone jewelry will include a 6.34 tourmaline and diamond brooch and a 7 carat opal and diamond ring. Among timepieces will be a man’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust and a lady’s Rolex 18K and diamond Cellini. Another highlight is a rare Bakelite pumpkin pin with googly eyes in the form of a scarecrow complete with straw arms and legs. Jewelry will also include a collection of over 35 lorgnettes including platinum and diamond, gold and sterling.

Decorative arts will offer a wrought iron mirror by Edgar Brandt (estimate $7,500-$12,500) as well as two Tiffany Studios bronze and slag glass boxes. Among several lots of ivory are a pair of carved whale bone busks. Ceramics will include several dinner services including a large 129 piece set of Herend Indian Basket (estimate $3,000-$5,000). Art pottery will be represented with pieces by Ephraim Faience, Rookwood, Van Briggle, Hampshire, Angelo Gazio, and Pascal Bernier.

A key lot in glass is a Ramses figural perfume bottle attributed to Baccarat. In the shape of a sphinx in frosted glass with green patina on a clear base, the piece is estimated at $3,000 to $5,000. Also of note is a pair of Louis Comfort Tiffany favrile salts. Textiles will offer quilts, Arts & Crafts linens, and coverlets including examples by John Brosey and Martin Breneman.

Saturday’s sale will conclude with lighting. Of note is a figural lamp circa 1890 in the form of a cockatoo and turtle. Table lamps by Handel and Bradley & Hubbard as well as 19th century girandoles and Arts & Crafts chandeliers will round out the sale.

Sunday’s session will include clocks, furniture and rugs, and fine, Asian, ethnographic and Native American art. One of the highlights of clocks is a Reading tall case clock by Daniel Oyster (estimate $8000-$10,000). Also of note is a large French Napoleon III garniture set. In the Orientalist taste, the three piece set is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

Among the forty plus lots of furniture will be a 19th century French tric trac gaming table (estimate $5,000-$7,000). Another key piece is a very large Pennsylvania Dutch cupboard circa 1780 to 1800 estimated at $8,000 to $10,000. Other pieces of note include an Italian inlaid pool table, a Carlisle Windsor bench, and a circa 1780 to 1820 kneehole desk. Persian rugs will include Kerman, Tabriz and Bokhara examples.

A large part of Sunday’s sale will feature ethnographic arts. Among 50+ lots of Native American will be pottery, including a circa 1920’s Acoma Pueblo olla estimated at $1,000 to $1,500, weavings and baskets. Navajo weavings will include Ganado, Teec Nos Pas, Third Phase, Two Gray Hills and Germantown. Baskets will include Papago, Pima and Athabascan. Over fifty lots of African arts will also be offered including ivory, masks, and figures. Of note are two 19th century Benin ivory carvings of obas as well as a carved ivory janus form scepter, Cameroon. Also to be offered are masks and figures from West Africa including Yoruba, Ibeji, Igbo, and Senufo.

Over ninety lots of Asian arts will be offered including ivory, jade, netsukes, ceramics, and woodblocks. Of note in Japanese arts are three lots of Kyoto Satsuma including a cased dragonware tea set, a pair of cased dragonware vases and a bowl. Another key lot is a figural tea caddy in the form of an eggplant (estimate $800-$1,200). Highlights of Chinese arts include a 19th century dragon robe, a carved ivory covered urn/incense burner, and a terra cotta Han burial horse circa 206-221. Among woodblocks are five Sino-Japanese triptychs of various war scenes as well as the pentaptych Procession of a Young Nobleman and his Suite by Rekisentei Eiri (active 1790-18800) (estimate $2,000-$3,000).

Sunday’s auction will conclude with fine art including paintings, bronzes, and prints. Highlights among paintings include a large oil on canvas by Eduard Steinbruck (German, 1802-1882) estimated at $5,000-$7,000. Also of note is a watercolor Cavalier et Cheval, Jaune et Bleu by Marino Marini (Italian, 1901-1981) (estimate $10,000-$15,000) and a portrait of a lady by James Brade Sword (American, 1839-1915) (estimate $7,000-$10,000). Among other portraits is a Colonial portrait of Isaac Stoutenburgh, a member of the New York State Senate from 1778 to 1787. Paintings by such as artists as Henry A. Ferguson (American, 1845-1911), Arthur M. Foweraker (British, 1873-1942), George E. Browne (American, 1871-1946), Warren Davis (American, 1864-1928) and Luigi Loir (French, 1845-1916) will also be offered.

Among prints are works by Picasso, Erte, Icart, Miro, Dali, O. Winston Link, Wilfred Loring and Andrew Wyeth. Among bronzes are works by Erte, Jean-Didier Debut (French, 1824-1893), Adrien E. Gaudez (French, 1845-1902), Alphonse A. Arson (French, 1822-1880), Jules Moigniez (French, 1835-1894), Johannes Dommisse (1878-1955), and James Earle Fraser (American, 1876-1953). Of note is a carved marble bust entitled “Beatrice” by Prof. G. Besgi (estimate $1,500-$2,000).
