A unique collection of memorabilia relating to the iconic footballer Billy Wright CBE (1924-1994) has recently come to light at a valuation event at in Wolverhampton.
The haul of paperwork and documents includes a signed Civic Banquet programme from April 1959 celebrating his 100 full internationals for England. There is another Civic Banquet programme held 10th May 1954 for the Wolverhampton crowned champion in 1953/54 season signed by a number of players including Billy Wright himself. An accompanying autograph album includes the signatures of other notable 1950’s footballers such as those of Sir Matt Busby, (Manchester Utd), Stanley Cullis, (Wolverhampton Manager), Joe Mercer and Billy Wright.
Wright spent his whole career at Wolverhampton and was the first player in the world to win 100 caps and the record for the longest unbroken run in competitive international football.
The collection was discovered by Richard Winterton whilst filming for ‘Dickinson’s Real Deal’ television programme at Wolverhampton Civic Hall. It is being offered in Richard Winterton’s 26th September Collectors’ Sale in Lichfield and carries a £300-400 estimate.
