Bellmans Auctioneers, Wisborough Green, West Sussex is to launch 2014 with the sale of a large and interesting collection of coins. The collection consists of over 200 Roman, late Roman, British and World coins and will be sold on Friday, 24th January from 10am. The collection is particularly strong in late Roman Solidi and Islamic gold coins. The sale will be fully illustrated on the Bellmans website; www.bellmans.co.uk and is open to view from Friday 17th January.
This unique collection has been privately consigned by a Sussex family which has been passed down through the family for over a century. Highlights include a gold Five-Pound Victoria coin, dated to 1887, depicting the jubilee head and St George to the reverse, (S 3864), with an estimate of £1200-1500.

The auction also includes these extremely rare and fine examples of Billion Dirhams; KINGS OF MURCIA, Muhammad b. Sa’d (542-567h, Mursiya (5)64h (A 407B), and KINGS OF MURCIA, Muhammad b. Sa’d (542-567h), Mursiya (5)64h (A 407B), each estimated at £300-400.
The sale also includes coins originating from the Roman Empire, Theodosius I (AD 379-395). The gold Solidus from the Thessalonica mint displays a diademed draped and cuirassed bust, with two emperors enthroned with a globe between and victory above to the reverse. This coin is a very fine example and is estimated at £500-700.
Other sale highlights include these Roman Empire, Theodosius I (AD 379-395), gold Solidus, from the Constantinople mint, Officina, which display a draped and cuirassed bust, the reverse displaying a superb portrait of Constantinopolis seated holding sceptre and shield. The coin weighs 4.5g and is estimated at £700-900.
