The enduring appeal of the Star Wars movie franchise means that memorabilia relating to the films can command significant sums when it comes up for auction. Wolverhampton auction house Cuttlestones has first-hand experience of this, with Star Wars items regularly passing through its Specialist Collectors’ sales.
Hot on the heels of the £2,500 sale of a collection of some 110 unboxed vintage Star Wars figurines – including Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Landro Calrissian, Emperor, Obi-wan Kenobi, Ewoks, Yak Face, Jawas, Yoda, R2-D2 among many others – there are high hopes for a strong contingent of Star Wars lots in the sale rooms’ forthcoming Friday, 3rd February Specialist Collectors’ Auction.
A similar selection of 30 Star Wars figures – including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Ewoks, R2-D2, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca and others together with various weapons and accessories – is among the many Star Wars related lots in the upcoming auction. Also included in the sale is a large private collection of mainly modern boxed and unopened Star Wars figures and Memorabilia, with highlights including a large Hasbro ‘The Legacy Edition – Millenium Falcon’, with an estimate of £100-£200, also many boxed Star Wars Kotobukiya ARTFX 1:7 scale figures including Darth Vader, Storm Trooper, Scout Trooper, Clone Trooper – Commander Bly, as well as an extensive collection of unopened ‘Star Wars – Revenge of the Sith’ figures.
With a wide range of collectable items and toys, ranging from original figures to a huge volume of mint condition modern examples, expectation are high for this extensive collection – as sale room manager Richard Forrester explains:
“With Star Wars memorabilia – especially toys – it can be hard to spot exactly what will get the collectors excited. Boxed, mint condition toys always perform well but, as the October sale showed, even unboxed, played-with collections of toys can contain gems that will really get them hot under the collar.
“In fact, things got so heated between two bidders in the room at the last auction on the lot that achieved £2,500 that we were concerned a fight may break out! Hopefully passions won’t run quite that high at the next sale but there’s every chance that if two or more collectors spot something they like among the figures we’ll be in for a bidding war again and see the lot achieve a significant sum.”
With Cuttlestones offering live online bidding alongside commission and telephone bidding options for those who can’t attend the sale on the day, the auction reaches a global audience of fans. Bidders from as far afield as the US, China and Australia regularly buy through the sale room, so the auction is open to the international community of Star Wars fans and collectors.
The Star Wars figures and other lots related to the film franchise will come under the hammer at Cuttlestones’ Friday 3rd February Specialist Collectors’ Sale. The full catalogue will be available to view online form Friday, 28th January 2017.
