Hart Davis Hart Opens Fall Season with $11.1 Million Wine Auction

In a two-day auction this past weekend, Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. brought in $11.1 million soaring over the high estimate of $10.1 million while selling 100% of the 3,421 lots offered in their September Auction of Finest & Rarest Wines. The impressive sale was the largest wine auction held in the U.S. so far in 2020, cementing HDH’s top status. An outstanding number of bids were placed over the course of the sale, with bidders participating from 12 countries, bringing 74% of lots to sell above their high estimates.

Friday’s session saw A Monumental Cellar of Sine Qua Non (lots 643-954) bring in $903,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $556,000-831,000. Highlights from the group include 3 bottles of 1998 Sine Qua Non Syrah, Hospice du Rhône, Alban Vineyard which sold for $13,145 (lot 715, est. $8,500-13,000); two 12-bottle lots of 1996 Sine Qua Non White Wine, Omadhaun & Poltroon which brought in $10,157 each (lots 869-870, est. $6,000-9,000); and 11 bottles of 2012 Sine Qua Non White Wine, In the Abstract which garnered $4,541 (lot 910, est. $1,200-1,800).

Saturday opened with The André R. Donikian Collection (lots 1698-1863) which realized $878,000 (est. $545,000-818,000). 12 bottles of 1959 Château Haut-Brion sold for $33,460 (lot 1698, est. $15,000-22,000); while 1982 Bordeaux faired well with 12 bottles of Lafite Rothschild bringing in $35,850 (lot 1708, est. $18,000-28,000); 8 bottles of Latour garnering $15,535 (lot 1709, est. $8,000-12,000); and full case lots of La Mission Haut-Brion (lot 1714, est. $8,500-13,000) and Mouton Rothschild (lot 1716, est. $8,500-13,000) bringing in $15,535.

Additional highlights from the sale include a full case of 2006 La Romanée, Comte Liger-Belair which sold for $59,750 (lot 281, est. $30,000-45,000); a single magnum of 2010 Romanée-Conti, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti which garnered $50,190 (lot 323, est. $26,000-38,000); and a single magnum of 1985 Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Armand Rousseau which brought in $19,120 (lot 2240, est. $7,000-10,000).
