Market Remains Strong as Hart Davis Hart May Wine Auction Brings in $5.9 Million

Hart Davis Hart Wine Co., the #1 wine auction house in the U.S., continued its success in 2021 with a tremendous May auction that brought in a total of $5.9 million against pre-sale estimates of $3.4-5.2 million. These record results were due to the passionate bidding seen throughout the sale from bidders around the globe, bringing 83% of lots to sell above their high estimate. The auction house has sold 100% of all lots offered at auction in 2021 thus far and continues to see the strongest prices realized in the industry.

One of the highlights of the sale was A Pristine Cellar of Benchmarks which offered top wines from around the world. Earnest bidders drove prices high for lots such as 12 bottles of 1990 Vosne-Romanée, Beaux Monts, Domaine Leroy which sold for $33,460 (lot 1254, est. $19,000-28,000); 6 bottles of 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos St-Jacques, Armand Rousseau which garnered $14,340 (lot 1263, est. $7,000-10,000); and an imperial of 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild which brought in $17,925 (lot 1178, est. $9,5000-14,000).

The Gladwyne Cellar attracted good interest from bidders with a deep collection of Sine Qua Non offered. Individual highlights included a 3-magnum assortment of 2000 Sine Qua Non In Flagrante/ Incognito which sold for $6,573 (lot 575, est. $3,000-4,500); two 6-bottle lots of 2003 Sine Qua Non The Inaugural Assortment which brought in $8,365 each (lots 580-581, est. $4,800-7,500); and 3 bottles of 2012 Sine Qua Non Chardonnay, Pearl Clutcher which garnered $5,019 (lot 669, est. $2,200-3,200).

Burgundy prices remained robust with 6 bottles of 2014 Montrachet, Comtes Lafon garnering $22,705 (lot 1160, est. $10,000-15,000); 6 magnums of 2005 Echézeaux, Emmanuel Rouget selling for $16,730 (lot 1806, est. $6,500-9,500); and 6 bottles of 2015 Romanée-St-Vivant, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti bringing in $19,120 (lot 68, est. $9,500-14,000).

Additional highlights from the sale included a full case of 1990 Hermitage, Jean-Louis Chave which brought in $23,900 (lot 1084, est. $12,000-18,000); a double-magnum of 1995 Alzero, Giuseppe Quintarelli which garnered $6,573 (lot 539, est. $1,500-2,200); and 6 bottles of 2001 Harlan Estate Red Wine which sold for $8,365 (lot 433, est. $3,800-5,500).
